Blade Thickness

This graph illustrates the relationship between blade length and thickness. As a blade length increases, the flexibility of the blade increases. As a blade thickness increases, the rigidity increases. The logic is as follows; the shortest blade, in the thickest option will be a blade with the highest rigidity. vice versa, the longest blade, in the thinnest option will be a blade with the highest flexibility. It is important to know what combination of these characteristics is required for the application.

Most reciprocating saw machines have a stroke length of around 1-1/4". Because of this the reciprocating saw blade chosen should be, at least, 3" longer then the application (cutting a 4" c-channel should use a blade of 7" or longer). Choosing a blade shorter then needed could result in the tip of the blade impacting the inside of the cut, damaging the blade, shortening blade life, and worse - personal injury.

Tooth pitch

A – BLADE LENGTH – the distance a blade measures from the tip to the end of the tang. (blade length ranges from 4” and go up to 12”)

B – BLADE THICKNESS – the distance measured from side to side on the blade. (thickness ranges from .035” up to .062”)

C – BLADE WIDTH – the distance measured from the back edge to the cutting edge. blade width ranges from ¾” up to 1”)

D – TOOTH EDGE – this is measured in teeth per inch that will be dependent on the cutting application. (blades available in straight or variable pitch)
